The October Book!
The Sunshine State Reader we will be reading is Extra Credit by Andrew Clements.
It isn't that Abby Carson can't do her schoolwork, it's just that she doesn't like doing it. And that means she's pretty much failing sixth grade. When a warning letter is sent home, Abby realizes that all her slacking off could cause her to be held back -- for real Unless she wants to repeat the sixth grade, she'll have to meet some specific conditions, including taking on an extra-credit project!
If you want to read more, please join me in reading the October book.

The September's Book Nook was held on Tuesday and we had 16 students that attended. There was great conversation about the book Captain Nobody. We had our first PTA sponsored drawing for the next month's book. All of the students' names, that participated in the Book Nook, were put into a drawing for our next book. Rachel won the new book, Flight of the Phoenix. Congratulations!

2011-12 Book Nook Schedule
Do you want to get a head start in reading the Sunshine State Readers for the upcoming school year.
Mrs. Appelman has started reading the Sunshine State Readers. I am almost done with my first book Out of My Mind. The July book that I will be reading is Umbrella Summer. Due to time, I will not have a Book Nook talk on these books, but encourage for you to read with me anyways over the summer. The first book I will have a Book Nook talk on is Captain Nobody. Since we will only be in school for 2 weeks in August, I encourage all that want to participate start reading before we return to school. Enjoy your summer and Happy Reading!!!!!!!!!

Summer Reading for Mrs. Appelman
I received a Amazon Kindle from my family and it allows me to download books. In fact, I can carry hundreds of books in this little device. While looking at the books I could buy, I found one of the new Sunshine State Readers for 2011-12 school year and I downloaded it.
So if you want to know what Mrs. Appelman is reading, the book is Out of My Mind by Sharon Draper.
As I began to read, I realized I really had no idea what this story was going to be about from the story's title. We often use the title of books to predict what may happen in the story. My predictions were all wrong! So as I started to read, I had to adjust my predictions from the story and began using my questioning strategy.
I hope you have started your summer reading!!!!!!

May's Sunshine State Reader- The Girl Who Could Fly
The Girl Who Could Fly by Victoria Forester is Mrs. Appelman's May Sunshine State Reader.
Do you like to read stories about superheroes or X-men? This might be a book for you. Piper can fly, but she is not the only child with extraordinary abilities. Some of her classmates have x-ray vision, can move objects with their minds and even create their own weather. I hope you will join me in reading this exciting new story.
Kenny and the Dragon Book Nook
We had a wonderful Book Nook today. Four students from Mrs. Tyrie's room participated. I particularly liked the recipes that they thought the dragon, Grahame, would make better.

April Sunshine State Reader is Safe at Home
This is the April Sunshine State Reader. I have used a strategy to help build my reading stamina. I set a timer for 40 minutes and found a quiet spot to read. I did not allow any distrations and my focus was only on what I was reading. Suprisingly, I read a fourth of the book. It is very interesting and I am learning a bit about baseball.
Set a timer for yourself and dedicate time to just reading without interference from t.v, computers, games, cell phones, etc. Let's see how you do.
Remember the Book Nook for Safe at Home will be held on May 11. Question are due to Mrs. Appelman by MAY 9th. Click here for the questions

February/ March Sunshine State Reader is Kenny and the Dragon
Kenny and the Dragon is in the genre of a fairy tale. It has great fictional characters that show us how important it is to not judge someone before you come to know them.
Mrs. Appelman's Book Nook will be held on Tuesday, April 26th at 2:00. Remember to complete your 3 questions. Click here for questions. The questions are due to Mrs. Appelman by April 21st.
